Another reason why boomers are confused is because amnesty was not a ground for immigration until 1965. An immigrant had to have a valid reason to be in the US, and that often involved proving that one could work by immigrating through various worker visa programs that usually involved hard, physical labor. Thus, many of the immigrant families they knew in their youth were of a different caliber and class than what we see today.
