   Why don't the shields activate automatically in #startrek ?

   Seems odd to be so technologically advanced that you have warp speeds, transporters, replicators and yet we have to manually activate shields.

     Maybe their society was so traumatised by self-driving cars that they passed a law insisting that things like teleporters and shields can only be done manually by a human?
