I feel like people who ask locals for ‘hidden gems’ and places ‘off the beaten path’ always end up at the places most unhidden, most on the paths

@skinnylatte yanked down the funnel of false authenticity

Frankly, I don’t bother anymore. Unless you’re someone I trust to *take three trains and transfer twice* to go to my favorite noodle shop, I’m not telling you where I eat

@skinnylatte Maybe I'm misinterpreting the tone, but this seems weirdly hostile towards people who are looking for more genuine experiences when they travel.
I give way more credit to someone willing to ask a local than someone who uses a generic tourist guide or travel blog.

@soviut probably tone. I’m just personally past making an effort to give people lists of things, and then realizing that nobody really cares: they just want to see the same things, and that’s okay. Don’t make locals do the labor of giving someone a ‘genuine’ experience. The idea of ‘off the beaten path’ travel is very rooted in an old world view anyway.

@skinnylatte ah okay. I've generally had pretty good interactions with people who are just looking for a good bar nearby and I'm not going to direct them to Jack Astors or some chain restaurant. They tend to just be looking for something they'd only be able to find in Toronto and I'm happy to direct them.
The only thing that grates on me is when someone asks for "the best" of something. That's some lazy food blog BS.
