People see a BNC and do jackshit bonkers things to it.
I've learnt to float those suckers, isolate them to 10 kV, give them 50 ohms AC termination, clamp them with 100W RMS capable TVS diodes and use min/max holds to determine edge transition levels, since apparently electrical engineers are incapable of reading: 3.3V LVPECL logic, 50 Ohm, 20V * 100us max, chassis & OC PE ground referenced.

after working on that bulletproof DMX ArtNet bridge where you can feed it 60V continuously on any pin without it caring at all, I keep thinking that it'd be cool to develop similarly abuse-proof IC breakout boards for the education market. fully isolated IOs, all pins tolerant of continuous DC up to at least ±24V, robust clamping and ESD protection, easily replaceable connectors.
