I gave a talk at last month about the role of organising in Open Source. I have three obserpinions therefrom:

    1. Going all-in on permissive licensing was a mistake that directly led to extractive behaviour
    2. Copyleft not having a good answer to the actual concerns of people who chose permissive licensing was a mistake that directly led to people going all-in on permissive licensing
    3. It's too late to care about licensing, so we need other forms of consequences/ways to encourage organising

but advoacting for the necessity of one class of license over another?

nope, it really really doesn't matter any more unless you have lawyers

with that in mind, I will probably roll my eyes at you if you are advocating for a particular class of licence, except in the very narrow case of software that is absolutely necessary for a device to operate, in which case, copyleft is a good (if presently hobbled, pending SFC vs. Visio) proxy for disclosure of source code/right to repair

      FURTHER POINTS:

      1. Invite me to give this talk somewhere else, it's good stuff, and it's much better in a 33-minute format than a toot on mastodon
      2. gosh it's amusing that early Django contribs are faving my original post, since I use Django as one of the litmus tests for how badly copyleft maximalists fucked up in the early '00s.
