not saying that any of this tariff shit is a good thing but it's really funny to see people saying things like "um actually, it's GOOD that the costs of our products is highly subsidized through the extraction of the life, dignity, resources, and stability from places where I don't have to look at it"

degrowth communism will necessitate drastically lowering our rate of consumption and shifting towards local-first, worker-owned, and sustainable production. maybe a good excuse to start now?

the tariffs really are the perfect political opportunity to push forward some radical moves in local politics. legislation supporting new & existing local worker-coops and energy & food cooperatives wouldn't just be an abstract climate issue but an immediate and sane response to national economic policy

@clarity right now probably nearly every elected feels like telling people they can't have infinite treats forever is electoral suicide, and an important early step is reminding them what order "think of a better world and how to get there" and "think about what promises will get you elected" are supposed to go in.

@jplebreton yeah for _sure_. Though also idk like, I think about how quickly conservative pundits are pivoting to "own the libs and be a real man by having less treats". I think people are actually hungry for a real answer to the guilt they feel over their treats, one that's not consumer choice oriented but a real and straightforward political plan.

@clarity exactly yeah, the problem is the lack of context and systems awareness and willingness to engage on that basis.

@jplebreton honestly I am still reeling over the fact that I have been hearing conservative talking heads in and out of the white house saying lines that could in isolation come entirely out of a Degrowth playbook. "Don't look at the GDP", "It's okay for stock prices to go down". It feels like a genuine blow against capitalism (favor of the dark enlightenment's fascist techno-feudalism) and it's so surreal.

@jplebreton Yeah… if the liberals somehow pull out of this mess and regain power it'll be a complete stranglehold on possibilities, I think. And then fascism wins again, presumably. Bleak.

@clarity yeah i'm genuinely concerned that it will put stink on the basic concept of "not constantly sacrificing humans into the maw of capital", which of course is the opposite of their goal.
