Trump is engaged in a top-down fascist takeover that has no widespread support. It successfully blitzed the federal bureaucracy and Democratic "opposition," which was supine to begin with. But Trump has always been a creature and creation of the media, and the media have become so useless and sycophantic that even if his brain was working properly, he would have no way to navigate back to the real world through it. He only cares if he's popular and the media can't and won't be honest about it.

In a sense, this is true of the entire far right in the US, which is obsessed with what Curtis Yarvin called "the cathedral," i.e., the "liberal" media and academia. And while it's advantageous to control the media -- something Republicans learned a long time ago after Vietnam and the Civil Rights Movement -- they are, as you can see, so hyper-fixated on DEI and "woke" and their supposed liberal adversaries within these institutions that they never bothered to build a popular movement.
