     Goethe wrote a fairytale full of mysterious esoteric symbolism.

     It's been analyzed to death for centuries, by Rudolf Steiner in particular.

     Schopenhauer however, claims that Goethe told him personally that it all means nothing, and he wrote it mostly as a joke
