   The attacks by the Trump administration on universities by cutting funding are painful, and are going to damage our ability to conduct research. The attacks that are revoking student visas are utterly terrifying to students and are destroying our ability to teach.

     I have students who are afraid to come to class because of ICE. I have students deleting their social media presence for fear they're being surveilled, looking for excuses to deport them. Five UMass students have had visas revoked: https://www.umass.edu/news/article/immigration-actions-affecting-students-umass-sponsored-visas

     @ethanz My general view is these illegal actions will cause foreign students are going to become increasingly averse to seeking educations in the US. Why would you come to a place where you might be arbitrarily detained indefinitely at any moment and denied any sort of legal recourse? Why would you put yourself through that and have that hanging over your head constantly?

     @ethanz Nobody really knows what effects this will have on foreign students already in the US. How many will transfer out? Maybe the effects will just be on new enrollment. I can't imagine the effects will be inconsequential. There are something like 1.1 million foreign students in the US and they represent a lot of $ in college budgets. Combine this with Trump pulling federal funds from schools which don't dance to his tune...a lot of schools might go under from that combined lack of funding.
