   A snapshot of what tariffs will look like on the ground. It used to be easy to get UK marmalade at every large-ish Spanish supermarket. When the final Brexit hammer fell, the jars slowly disappeared and were never restocked.

   It’s not that UK marmalade couldn’t be imported, but between the ridiculous paperwork and the import duties, it just wasn’t worth doing it, and the price would be double - not just because of tariffs or import taxes, but the labour of the paperwork.

     And slowly, people who loved British marmalade (I know a lot of Spanish people who loved it) just settled for something else, and got new breakfast habits. Flower honey, delicious compotes from Poland, etc.

     Now, it’s like it never existed. Even if the UK joined the single market again tomorrow, British marmalade would never regain the customer base it once had.

     People shrug and move on.

     Now, being in the EU, people have a lot of other options to choose from. And so the absence of the marmalade became an excuse to try something new from somewhere inside the EU.

     But the US has put tariffs on almost everywhere. The rich won’t care. They’ll pay whatever it costs for what they want.

     But for regular folk… that special bottle of Champagne for a wedding, or graduation, or an anniversary. Gone.
