   Tense public debates had raged in Altrincham about the impact a new hotel for asylum seekers would have on community cohesion and safety.

   Residents of the affluent market town in Greater Manchester told The Times that the young men — often to be found whiling away the hours at the park or on the high street — had been “perfectly polite”.
