The thing about echidnas is they have pretty bad eyesight, so if you stay still they don't know you're there.

@frogglin my partner had an echidna forage happily for ants between her toes and her flip-flop. after ten seconds or so of calmly snooting about under there with her trying not to explode from tickles, it didn't find anything so it wandered amiably off. No qualms having a dig under decisively warm, living appendages. What i mean is, their eyesight might be totally fine - but they navigate via vibe-check and if you pass, you're cool.

@wouldinotcallmyselfahumanbeing The vibe check might be the key to be honest. I've had a few wander up to me over the years.
Of course, it's possible I just smell like ants.
