How do I RAID1 and existing VG and LV to a new disk? Oh also fuck me but new disk is 0.02TB smaller so the partition table is different... My guess is I need to repartition the existing VG and LV to a smaller size, copy the partition table over without UUIDs and then mdadm a new VG and add both disks in?

This is on proxmox so it's essentially just debian.

Why didn't I run a RAID1 set up from the start? Cos proxmox doesn't allow you to. Either ZFS or go home.

@dcatdemon thanks for the steps but if the RAID metadata wasn't written to the start of the existing disk, won't it cause issues? The existing disk has an existing VG and LV on it (that isn't a RAID1 VG).

Sorry if I wasn't clear initially.

Probably mdadm raid1 with the 'missing' flag and then rsync the existing disk to the new (with checksum checking). I'm assuming the data would fit 😊 You'll have a raid 1 with a missing drive. I think you know how to go from here?

What I actually meant was something like this 👇

If mdadm isn't your cup of tea, then you can even use lvconvert with a bit of resizing of your original disk (if it allows, depending on the fs type) note that this is risky though, backups should be done. I've not really tried this.
