   With how much Mojang has mangled the game's feel and pacing since 1.8.1, I don't think I could get back into Minecraft after all these years not playing, even if I pirated it.

     Alpha 1.2.6 - last update with the first world generation model.
     Beta 1.7.3 - this is the last update before hunger and sprinting was added.
     Release 1.2.5 - last update before villager trading started (and before singleplayer worlds used internal servers) and also the version that ran on Xbox 360.

     you need to go about it the correct way:
     1) get UltimMC launcher
     2) use a Golden-Age version (anything before Release 1.2.5)
     3) profit
     both versions have a ton of support via resource packs and mods if that's your thing.

     I don't think any big modders want to do anymore beyond the Caves&Cliff update. The game is too bloated for the effort required.

     well the modding community has been quite fragmented due to the fact that now there are like 4 different modloaders available and how most of the modded players of later versions never really had much exposure to earlier mods of the prior age
     
     out of the big mods only enderio got some semblance of a later version port, but with how fast the modding tools move it really only allows gimmick mods to keep up with new versions
