I've been going down that path with right-wingers and authoritarians myself. dilbert 1 likes this. -

@sun@shitposter.world @graf@poa.st my impression is that modern "infosec" is basically just internal company marketing. Like most of them their job is just convincing execs to buy shitty security tools

@anemone @graf I did cybersecurity-related stuff for a while, what I found was that most people are just really stupid and only can follow instructions pwm likes this. -

@anemone @graf "You HAVE to follow these guidelines. Also you HAVE to get consultants to say you followed them. They say you HAVE to install CrowdStrike. Oh, it's a kernel-level service we install on all your machines that downloads and runs arbitrary code. Stop questioning things and spend a million dollars." -

@sun @anemone @graf the way I describe it to most people, is that the difference between how people use computers is that 95% of people when interacting with a computer, or a program running on a computer, follow a checklist of steps to accomplish a task. And if, at any point, a situation occurs that deviates from the checklist, they must raise their hand and ask for an adult. They have no ability or desire to explore and solve the problem, and no intuition with which to even begin. It might as well be magic dilbert 1 likes this. -

@sun@shitposter.world @graf@poa.st also all software we use HAS to pass security checks by this badly designed tool that doesn't understand the concept of distro level patches

@sun@shitposter.world @graf@poa.st lol I WISH they would have asked us to explain (or rather accepted our explanation) instead of just bitching and refusing to move on until we installed backported versions from a third party repo because that's obviously so much more secure

@anemone @graf yesterday I was dealing with an automated github thing that detected a critical security bug in my code because I was "accepting user input that is used to make a network request" aka entering in someone's fediverse handle and it's parsed to make a webfinger query pwm likes this. -
