Lol at talking to non-profits from a anarchist mutual aid standpoint.

0: "So... we're just not used to how you are doing things. It's very new and exciting! But I'm not sure if it's aligned with what we do."

1: "We're... we're doing the exact same thing.... and we're doing it in a normal way.... and an old way... what do you mean?"

0: "It's just... well... we're used to a top down non-profit approach where people write grant requests and get a lot of money and then... well I'm not sure what they do with the money... but you all are just, well, going out there and doing it. Without any money. Or formal organization."

1: "Yeah... alright... umm... So you wanna work together or not?"

    0: "Frankly you scare us."

    1: "Yeah, I get that a lot."

(Side note, we have a person who works in corporate consulting and can speak non-profit language really well... she has volunteered to have us shut up and only let her speak. We all think that's the best idea going forward."

It's an organization that's been in my community for 50 years, yeah. But now me and my ADHD crew are coming in and pushing buttons and making waves because we see how it could be. I can get boots on the ground for my ideas, an organization to support it, and some community recognition with good context attached to it - because we're a nonprofit.

Montana has the largest per capita nonprofit count though, with decent reputations, so maybe we just do it different than you urban folk.

@tankdigital @tinker I do want to key off this. At one point, before a power play knocked me off the puck, I was developing a nonprofit that would exist to provide the kind of accounting and financial work needed so that every Pagan who dreamed of "starting a church" or similar nonprofit project could just shack up with my org and we'd handle the legal and the bean counting and leave the mutual aid to them.

Nonprofit law can be used to amplify mutual aid. I believe this deeply.

0: "Do you have a grant writing person or a formal donation campaign?"

1: What would we use money for?

People pick up food and drop it off. They volunteer their time and gas/electricity/feet-movement and get some food out of it.

Do you... do you wanna pitch over a fiver for gas? That'd help! Or I just bought some bags to store some bread in from the bakery... I guess I could use 2 dollars to that end...

Wait... what are YOU using money for?

0: "Well.. we have to pay the guy who writes grants and organizes donation campaigns."

      1: Huh...

I'm going to push back on this.

I work for a nonprofit, and we do our absolute best with what we can get. I'm fixing houses for people in my community. Getting heat into homes for single moms, getting ramps installed for elderly folks, and making their homes energy efficient.

Are there bad ones? Yeah. Hell yeah. But it's a model that can work for small organizations, because - properly run - it's not making anyone a profit.

      Sure I have a board. They're a hell of a network.
