   @revk he died a couple years ago so we don’t know for sure, but I do remember probably 30 years ago now… CompuServe was trying to get people to call the GIF files “CompuServe GIF” and as part of that they were promoting the slogan “Choosy developers choose GIF” which is a play on the Jif brand peanut butter slogan “Choosy moms choose Jif”

   But yeah, the patents are dead and I’m sure there are way less actual GIFs being used anymore.

   But as part of internet culture, I’m happy saying it like JIF

     Did the creator of GIF deliberately go for the statement on pronunciation being "JIF" do so just to create controversy and allow this to still be discussed even in 2025 when GIF is essentially an obsolete image format?

     (apart from compliance with The Online Safety Act for text based porn with images where GIF is actually in the law!).
