     @WarnerCrocker the Marine on the far left is Ira Hayes, a Native American from the Pima tribe. The battalion commander wanted a larger flag after the first smaller flag was raised in the morning. That afternoon a bigger flag retrieved from an LST was raised. The bigger flag could be seen by Marines further to the north.

     I'm just guessing here bit I think the reason for removing this from all the pentagon sites just might be because one of the people in the picture is a Puma Native American named Ira Hayes.

     Johnny Cash has a song called Ira Hayes. You should listen to it!
