I grew up driving automatic cars with their shifters on the steering column. In fact, this is exactly what the truck I learned to drive in looked like originally, though my dad cheaped out and got the tape deck without a CD player.
(The stereo was later replaced with a much nicer aftermarket unit.)

@tk I wish double DIN was still a standard. The aftermarket headunit market was insane in the late 90s
