   Android, offline map, route sharing

   When I have set up a complex route with start, destination, several intermediate points, I would like to save that to a file and send that to a friend, so they can open it, see the same info, walk the same route.

   OsmAnd+ is great for the setting up the route part and the walking part, but doesn't seem to have an export function? The closest I get is to export my whole route search history.

   Is there some option I'm overlooking? Is there another open source offline map for Android that has the function I want?

     Oh wow, it's even worse than I knew. I just tried the history function, and it doesn't save any of your waypoints, not even your starting point. I went back the entry for today's hike and it gave me ''from your position to <destination>".

     @graydon Yeah, but then I'd have to walk it first. 😊

     I want to do some research on Monday, plot a course, send to my friends, use the app for other things during the week, and then on Sunday load up the route again and walk the trail.

     @clacke If you have tracks turned on (which it is NOT by default), you should have a tracks bucket under My Places and you can export those. (It's been some while since I've done this, but it was there a decade or so ago, so I'd suppose it may still be there.)

     @graydon But on the topic of tracking, I tried OSMTracker and discovered that it only recorded my position when the app was in the foreground, even though it left a soft notification that I presumed was for maintaining location access.

     I'll see if OSMAnd+ does any better, didn't know it had tracking too.

     @clacke I am pretty sure you can save a named route whether or not you've walked it.

     So... Pick your start points and end points and set up the route.

     In the top row of icons about profiles, the leftmost thing is a caret; it's pointing up. tap it, and it points down and you get the route with more information including an elevation graphic.

     Under that graphic is "Details"; click that.

     You now have all the details; in the top right there's print-download-share icons.

     @graydon Oh nice! I can share it as a URL, and when I click the URL OSMAnd+ will load the route. Perfect.

     There's also optionally a file, but the URL seems to have all the info required.

     @clacke When you click download, your default option is "Save as new track"; that's the shareable thing.

     From this I can deduce that this is not a primary use case and there's an expectation you generally don't want to remember your route, but it's there.

     @graydon Basically the URL is a data storage format in the form of a URL. It's the same as sending the file, except the file doesn't work to just click -- it doesn't suggest to open it with OSMAnd+ -- whereas the URL opens OSMAnd+ just fine.

     @clacke I would be a titch cautious that people who are not understood to be you by OSMAnd+ can access the URL, but yeah.
