   One of the purposes of these on-again-off-again waffling tariffs, as well as the chaotic slash-and-burn nonsense of “DOGE,” is to create both damage to businesses •and• the possibility of exemptions, so that the Trump admin can squeeze them.

   It’s basically a mafia protection money racket: “Nice business you got there, shame if it got tariffed.”

     @inthehands @jeffjarvis but does that actually work? Even if Tesla gets a carve out, its suppliers won’t. I’m sure they use many standard components.

     It doesn’t work •well•. But all they need is a sort of “your windows will on average be smashed slightly less than your competitors” belief on the part of businesses — not even a fact, just a vibe — for it to work.
