Saw yet another ignorant and condescending European take on ‘who in their right mind would want to emigrate to America’ post.

Well, there’s a reason I’m spending thousands of dollars trying to stay in this country, but I don’t need to share it with people who don’t understand that lots of people have different reasons to emigrate and maybe your own countries are also quite terrible for immigrants.

One of these posts (there are many here) even said ‘only low quality immigrants like those from Southeast Asia want to go to America, the better quality people all go to Europe’

That’s not true, also I am southeast Asian, and also you guys sound very much like eugenicists when you toot like that

Moving to Europe including the richest countries there is a 30-50% pay cut from my southeast Asian country, with a lot more racism than America*, and zero chance of ever being accepted. I wish you all well in the new world order and all of that, America really and truly sucks, but you are not the immigrant dream destination you think you are

      * not a hot take, but a very carefully considered lukewarm take based on lived experience

The people who are very interested in moving to Europe are white American liberals tho! But it won’t be easy or possible for most of them either!

@skinnylatte "low quality immigrants" is a pretty telling opinion regardless of what regional group it's attached to

@skinnylatte I had an interesting conversation with a thoughtful UK (originally Australian) friend a while back who offered the „I couldn’t live in America“ line and discussing it, realized that if you come from a country with more centralized government, it’s hard to appreciate how much quality of life depends on the state you live in. CA is way ahead of other countries I’ve lived in on many things I care about (Environment, human rights, acceptance of minorities, tech adoption) even if I wouldn’t want to live in the median US state. we are of course, going through one of those periods where federal policy ironically, for a „StATeS RIghTs!“ government starts to act like a wrecking ball.

I’ve been thinking about the difference between growing up in an authoritarian city state and now living in an increasingly authoritarian large country. Friends from home ask ‘isn’t it bad when X happens?’ And I think of how: For the most part, the distance between politics and real life feels very large here. That, unless I make a point to go online and read certain things, many things about politics take a long time to filter over into ‘real life’. Whereas back home if someone made a speech or changed a policy, I would hear talk about it, feel it, discuss it, immediately. That’s also one of the differences in centralized states vs whatever this is.
