I often learn new things about our own collection from bookseller catalogs, and a colleague just sent me one about an important and rather chilling item. This is a 1551 decree from the Holy Roman Emperor requiring all Jews to wear a yellow ring in public (illustrated at the bottom right) nearly four centuries before the Nazi yellow star. The dealer said the Houghton copy was the only other one he had traced. https://id.lib.harvard.edu/alma/990041636810203941/catalog
@overholt > Where one or more Jews violate this statute and order after the indicated period of one month, and refuse to wear the sign indicated above, he shall lose the first and second time all clothes he is wearing and everything he has on himself; and half of it should fall to the reporter/accuser, half given to the local government or court where the Jew was found without this sign.
@kaia@overholt I’ve read of a few awful humiliations we were forced to endure. But most records of our achievements and our sufferings have been completely & purposefully destroyed. 1000s of years of it.
@kaia@brotka.st@overholt@glammr.us It's intressting how much and in which style they write to bring a Sentence to someone else and today it's be like that:
