    That "first they came for" poem says you should speak up for certain minorities because eventually you'll be a target too.

    But you know, you could also speak up simply because it's wrong to target people. Self interest isn't the only reason to oppose oppression.

      @voxofgod The story is that the author was a Lutheran pastor and Nazi sympathizer who turned against the movement after witnessing the horror that it caused. I think that's ok. I think the poem is ok. I just think it's a cliche that is overused by the simple minded.

      @thekitmalone I don't know where it is, but there is an excellent article floating around explaining how that poem was actually written by a Nazi

      @thekitmalone Martin Niemöller was actually a Nazi, and after everyone was rounded up, he was rounded up because he wasn't enough of a Nazi

      The "first they came for …" isn't a call to speak up for minorities, it's a warning that even if you are a Nazi and wanted to minorities rounded up, they will come for you anyway
