OMW to The Rock of Cashel. Check out the Cahir Castle interior today. They have an excellent exhibit of the 1599 siege by the Earl of Essex, who took the castle after bombardment. About 80 defenders were killed when they attempted to flee into the night. There are still two cannonballs stuck in the keep and a forward tower from that siege.

Just got back to my room and downloaded the day's photos. Here are two close-ups showing the cannonballs. See if you can spot them in the larger images.

Really enjoyed my walk around the interior. I like to imagine myself an invading attacker and figure out all the different ways the defenders would have to kill me on my way to storming the keep. In Cahir's case, the answer is a lot. Cahir has multiple lines of defense and puts a lot of barred doors (and a portcullis!) with accompanying kill-zones between you and a desired change in ownership. Lots of layers of inward facing killing machinery await you if you penetrate the outer walls.

In the afternoon, I visited The Rock of Cashel, a fortified religious site and place of kingship dating back millennia. Saint Patrick converted the King of Munster here and it is associated with many notables, including Brian Baru. It was eventually gifted to the church in perpetuity and became a prominent religious site. Today, it's got a wonderful unroofed cathedral, many high crosses, an Irish round tower and a Romanesque chapel.

@partnumber2 It's a good one. Largely intact and still very photogenic. They've got a display out front with a long list of films and television series its been in.

Coincidentally, I just turned over our calendar from Feb which was a picture of that very castle. 👀
