It's 2025 and there doesn't appear to be common video container+codec format better than H254 for 4K videos
We should just guillontine all of the lawyers who made this possible :guillotine:

VP9+Opus in WebM might actually be the only thing that's *mostly* compatible.
Handbrake refuses to ship a profile for this out of the box, so you have to make your own.
These stubborn idiots :argh:

JFC it works on Safari/MacOS, Firefox/Linux, but from within iOS Safari or apps? NOPE. The video won't play.
This is just dumb. It's like they're doing this to us on purpose to build a moat around proprietary services and platforms.

@mischievoustomato I really really like Opus and wish more things supported it

@vala yeah but I mean for sharing things "on the web" like videos posted here
We have the technology to share short 4K videos that are under 50MB, but very few people will be able to view them. The file size of H264 is so big in comparison. It's really frustrating.

@mischievoustomato @vala I tried yesterday doing AV1 in an mp4 container. MacOS/Safari could play it, iOS could play it, Firefox could not.

@feld @vala tbqh, firefox just plain sucks ass. It wouldn't accept a vp9 file in a mp4/mkv container when uploading something to instagram. Chrome? it was just fine. The worst part is that it didn't give any message unless you check the journal.

@mischievoustomato @vala yep tried VP9 in WebM which is the next best choice. MacOS/Safari could play it, Firefox could play it, but iOS Safari and iOS mastodon apps could not.

@feld @vala i don't get why the fug does iOS not support it. You'd imagine Apple would share code between iOS, iPadOS and macOS for this stuff, given that the chips are either the same or very similar.

@feld @vala @mischievoustomato safari can do a lot of shit that isn't standard like PSD in image tag

@hj @vala @mischievoustomato MP4 in image tag gets treated like a GIF I think?

@feld @vala @mischievoustomato no idea, once again it's not part of the standard.
