"The ruling Social Democrats (SPD) seemed to be trying to move further to the right and away from any social-democratic policies. Despite all these efforts, Olaf Scholz lost to his counterpart from the Christian Democrats (CDU), Friedrich Merz, a rich banker, Merkel’s former runner-up and soon the new Chancellor of Germany. The far right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is now the second-largest party." It's pretty much the same story, repeated all over the world: leftists are scuppered, sabotaged, smeared, and stamped out by those who still consider themselves liberal "centrists"; the working class mass majority have few appealing options to vote for; the rest of the voting population, sick of the status quo and professional politicians yet lacking any class consciousness, give votes to the far right; the "centrists" claim this to be the will of the people so themselves shift further right, rendering themselves irrelevant; the far right become the largest or second largest party; liberal pundits who aided and abetted in the first step ask "how did it happen?"
@MediaActivist Nonsense. Leftists don't let right and far-right parties win. Look at the US. The problem is that many so-called leftist voters have traded in their values for the "blame everyone else" card handed out for free by Kremlin-sponsored trolls. Simple, easy, no need to ever take responsibility, just blame and whine that no one is good enough.
@todymotmot I think you perhaps misread what I posted. Leftists aren't the ones letting the fascists in -- the "centrists" are the ones doing that. Democrats, Labour, Liberals... they've all shifted rightward over the years (as great folks like @dedicto have highlighted well) yet are outraged that leftists don't vote for them. Then they use blackmail: "Sure, we will continue climate collapse, genocide, authoritarianism, and funneling of wealth from poor to rich, but we're not fascists so either choose this evil or get the other one." They keep doing the same things over and over and losing spectacularly, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. All because they're addicted to capitalism.
