     @WarnerCrocker The ugly part isn’t the fault of winter. Like so many other urban problems in the USA, it is the fault of cars. Cities aren’t dirty. Cars are dirty.

     Before cars we switched to sleighs in the winter and rolled the roads instead of plowing them.

     @WarnerCrocker Sure did. But there are not many farms in urban areas, which is what I was referring to.

     And although it was a dairy and row-crop farm, the biggest muddy messes in winter on the farm all involved motor vehicles of one sort or another. Spring through fall? Well those messes were definitely on the cows.
