   White supremacists have been in charge of everything since the beginning. The only thing that has ever kept this country honest was having white people in power who saw themselves as Americans first, at war with Nazis or the traitors in the Confederacy, or who felt the need to compete with a rival like the USSR in terms of quality of life, or who literally had a gun to their heads.

     The pretense that America is too good, too civilized, and too white to have to contend with violent uprisings, whether coups or revolutions, took away the fundamental threat keeping fascists in check. Once they were normalized as politics as usual, and money was allowed to veto votes and prison sentences, it was inevitable that our imperishable democratic order would collapse. Effortlessly. And return to a corrupt state any 19th century American would recognize.

     There comes a point where the only solution to fascists is violence because they have usurped the democratic process and nullified the law. And it's a scary thing, which a handful of people could prevent if they had any principles. But I'm not holding my breath. It seems to me the US has to learn it's neither immune to nor above political violence. That imperial boomerang is going to have to hit hard before it sinks in.

     In the meantime, we have a Republican president calling himself a king, his party doing Nazi salutes and proclaiming him president for life, a drug-addled incompetent and his army of twenty-year-old Nazi script kiddies running rampant in the federal government, and the prevailing response from the media and politicians has been, "Huh."
