Isn't it weird how your frame of mind impacts your enjoyment of a book?

Example: I have tried and failed many times to get into George Eliot's "Middlemarch". I always found it dry and incredibly slow paced. Where is the plot? It's so many words about nothing.

This time around, I finally get it. Listening to the audiobook (Narrator: Nadia May) helped. Middlemarch is a *comedy* and the humor is in absurdity of these human characters in responding to their situations.

One of the reasons I like #JaneAusten is that she brings the whole package: humor, engaging characters, mastery of the written word, and engaging plotlines.

At their best, a lot of older English authors wrote about humans and our strange, contradictory, hypocritical, silly ways. Dickens somehow managed to do it while simultaneously being deadly serious and funny. The Brontës did it albeit without cracking a smile.

When the @StoryGraph asks "is the story plot or character driven"? I realize that the far end of the spectrum, the "character driven" side, is occupied by books that leave the user inside the heads of the character thinking about and reacting to things. It's not enough that a person is "a character" - strange and remarkable - do we see the internal machinations of this person?

@derek Have you read any of Anthony Trollope's work? If not, you may well enjoy!
