     "호남은 고려 초에 금강 이남을 강남도(江南道)라 부른 데에서 유래되었다고 볼 수 있다. 금강 상류의 호강(湖江) 남쪽에 위치하는 지방이기에 호남이라는 지명이 유래되었다는 의견이 있으며, 전북특별자치도 김제시에 있는 벽골지의 남쪽이라는 의견도 있다."
