   Gabe Newell was hired by Microsoft on a whim because he was visiting his brother. Valve hired a lot of the guys who made Half-life from the modder community for Quake. It's a shame this model didn't catch on in the rest of society. Just seeing who's good by trying them on is probably the best way to give people a start in life. No one knows what an "education" really is, especially a four year one, but putting an 18-22 year old in a position and seeing what he does works 100% of the time. At the least, you know he's not suited to that if he fails. And more often than not they succeed. Everyone gets something out of it. It's a great model.

     @griffith Hidetaka Miyazaki was an accountant, but after playing Ico he tried to apply as a game designer and in about 10 or so years became the company president.
     The over reliance on credentials really shuts out competent people who don't want to suck up to corporate management.

     @Arkana Credentials aren't how people in the real world work. They're also completely backwards-looking. The whole resume system only really works for people inside their careers. You can only point to your accomplishments when you have some. That kills everyone who might be in the prime of their life but haven't started their career yet.
