Alhambra / Monterey Park / Rosemead in LA are hotspots of lots of different types of Asian foods. It always was, since the time of the Vietnamese arrivals in California, but it has grown to absorb every wave of new arrivals and their delicious foods.

When my Vietnamese Chinese neighbor in SF found out I was going to LA, she was like can you pls buy the cured sausages from my favorite sausage maker from Saigon? I found it in Rosemead. It was the same family, same recipe. She was so happy to try it again after decades.

There's food from Kalimantan and Medan. There's Chinese sausage makers from Saigon Chiantown. There are places as good as Chengdu. There's Uighur food. There a huge density of good and great boba, snacks, and other places I wish I had a fraction of in SF, on just one stretch. There are multiple homemade tofu places. There's bougie chains from China and Taiwan, offering the latest in modern Chinese and Taiwanese foods. There are really traditional places from past waves of migration.

More than half of the new Chinese immigrants who arrive from the southern land border end up in or around Monterey Park and Alhambra. They bring with them all of their possessions and capital to start the businesses that will sustain them in their new lives: often, it involves feeding others'.

And I want to eat (and document) all of it!

@skinnylatte I went to college in the San Gabriel Valley. Having been raised in a very white Southern US household, discovering all kinds of new food was one of the best things.
