the reason that programmers are so elitist is because we lack proper labor unions, so our job security is based mainly on gatekeeping the skills necessary to do our job. there i said it

@raeaw This is why when they ask that work gets documented, and train people others on what's being done, the answer is not full compliance.
Your skills are trade secrets, it devalues your worth, and it makes you replaceable.

@raeaw programmers like to think they're Michelangelo but in truth their employers see them as house painters and profit from the dissonance

@raeaw I remember when developers took away my ability to edit css by wrapping it in layers and layers of JavaScript in a jenga tower of dependencies.
To then complain css is too mysterious, and instead of using well known css solutions, wrap more and more JavaScript on top of it.
Turning any project into a nightmare of dependencies and bug tracking.
It was arrogant and destructive but hey the more dependencies the more debugging. It’s hard to feel sorry for them.

@raeaw I think that's an interesting idea, but if other coders are like me, then I suspect the elitism comes from developing an incredibly specific skill set, a lack of useful rivals at it while young, and being told repeatedly through childhood by adults that "You might be a nerd now, but you'll show them all when you're a rich coder when you grow up."
