As I recall, in the 1980s, microwave ovens were relatively new. And people had a bit of apprehension about what it's doing to food and whether it could blow up and stuff.

@paco This is true. My grandmother told me a story of some dude who opened up his microwave before it was finished running, stuck his hand in it, and his hand got all melted and deformed. To this day, I still check to make sure the microwave is completely off before opening it.

@ramsey not a bad idea. In the early '00s one of my college roommates had an (already antique) microwave that would keep running if you opened the door mid-cycle.
