Ever since the early 1900s (definitely before WWI) scientists & elites have known that burning coal and oil were bad for the environment.

In the 1950s the largest oil companies in the US were informed by their scientific teams we were on a course for global warming. They decided to hide the reports.

In the 1960s-1970s, the Club of Rome described the collision between capitalism and finite global resources. That report was also briefly discussed.
