   I'm the "bad art teacher"

   I have my students draw the icons they use in the animations they code on paper with paint markers. Unlike the art teachers I tell them use every symbol and short-hand we can think of.

   This is icon design. If they do "life drawing" techniques their icons will be bad and unreadable.

   The kids love this because many of them have not had experience with being successful* drawing.

   *successful meaning your friends correctly recognize what you drew and think it's cute.

     I get why art teachers hate it that kids do these cartoons where it's all very programatic and they haven't pulled much from the object they are drawing.

     But, also not every child will be good at drawing. That doesn't mean they can't draw well enough to communicate their ideas clearly ... and if you don't have an innate sense of proportion, if you have not practiced a lot, using "tricks" is the way to go to get the results.
