   My parents arrive in SF this week! They are extremely adept at public transit and can navigate their way around anywhere in the world with public transit. My mum in particular has the ability to just always know the right bus (even pre Google maps days) to get to the best food.

   I have many early childhood memories of taking buses to the jungles of northern Thailand and Borneo with her. She is extremely adventurous and when they are here in the Bay Area, every day they are here they are somewhere new (without a car). One time I called her to see where she was at and she was like ‘I’m in San Rafael, I took the bus here’

   I really feel like I benefited from her love for people, food, adventure and transit. Like her, I generally feel like I can show up lots of places I’ve never been, find a bus, and find a friend, and eat great food with them by the end of the day.

   It’s given me such a unique insight into so many parts of the world.

     One time I was telling my mum I planned to go to Marseille, and she said oh e-mail this person! It was a young Algerian French person she had met while we were backpacking in northern Thailand, you were off doing whatever and I was talking to this group of people. I emailed this person and he was like omg I remember your mum please come and stay in my spare bedroom in Marseille!

     For context, my mum speaks English but it’s not her first language, but she somehow manages to just make friends across all backgrounds. I’ve always found that impressive about her. As a young autistic person I struggled a lot with social skills early on, so if you can’t see it at all, a lot of it was just ‘be like mum’
