Fun fact: if a battery is below half charge (determined by voltage output) on GM vehicles, the alternator will not charge the said battery.

guy at the garage said something weird and i'm trying to understand whether it's nonsense or not.
"when a battery gets low, it strains the alternator and could cause it to also die."
i thought the alternator was always producing energy, and the voltage regulator controls whether or not the battery uses that energy to charge or not.
what do i know. i just read books. i'm not a real auto mechanic.
