   If I walk down my street and ask my neighbor "What are you?", he'd probably be very confused and not know how to answer.

   If I walked into a Hollywood studio and asked a random executive "what are you?", I have no doubt he would respond with "I'm Jewish".

   Americans have allowed their culture to be so disintegrated that they are unable to self-identify.

     Most people are confused by the question, but will then usually list the primary status characteristic they define themselves as. For a lot of people it's their jobs or careers. For others it's their race or nationality. I feel like it say something about how your define yourself: by your accomplishments and choices or by immutable/identity characteristics.

     @dcc sure, but I don't think that's what it's about. It's classic demoralization to prevent unification of the plebs. It has happened numerous times in the past to numerous peoples, most recently to the Soviet Union. Perhaps due to what American culture used to (aspire to) be, it has come down hard here and is very apparent to anyone paying attention with a >midwit IQ.

     @rw my greater point is that while some will identify with religion, others will identify with their ethnicity, their occupation, or even their gender.

     Few, if any, will self-identify as American.

     This is by design.
