    Meanwhile, in the normal world:

    https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/ecuador-president-says-new-trade-deal-with-canada-finalized-2025-02-02/

    "#Ecuador president says new #trade deal with #Canada finalized"

    Apparently, #Trump admires President #McKinley's #tariffs (same guy Trump replaced #Denali's name with)

    This fucking moron is trying to recreate antiquated #protectionist bullshit from the #GildedAge that doesn't work in the modern world

    #China will expand its trade

    Canada and Ecuador and others will bypass the #USA

    And the USA will suffer mightily

    So fucking stupid

      @benroyce @akaruiwrx also worth mentioning that the US does not just have oodles of extra industrial and extractive capacity on standby. One thing tariffs do is encourage buying domestically produced items, but if your economy cannot meet its own demand for a given item, putting a tariff on that item just makes the item more expensive.

      And if you're an American manufacturer and you use that item in your products, your cost, and thus your price to consumers, increases.

      @akaruiwrx

      because we've grown past that era

      usa benefits much more from free trade- mercantilism is for developing countries

      or as you note, isolated tariffs for specific reasons

      what trump is doing just hits everything. any hope it will foster american manufacturing is greatly offset by the huge hit in trade. why? because old stupid assholes think the 1950s can come back?

      furthermore, other countries grow stronger ties with each other

      and our rivals

      this is a gift to china

      What's confusing is how it is that other countries can place tariffs on US goods and it works fine for the rest of the world but the US can't do the same. Biden put quite a few tariffs in place but no one was upset about it, granted I don't think he advertised to the public what he was doing so there's that. And Trump is kind of an idiot and has to toot his own horn all the time. I'm genuinely interested in why tariffs work for other countries but not the US what is so special about us that tariffs can't work here but can work for almost every other civilized nation.
