   @aurelia yeah I'm using `fish_add_path` everywhere; I'm not sure how my path got corrupted but I removed the line from fish_vars and it rebuilt it correctly

   it was just ... incredibly frustraing; I'd just as soon remove the universal variables and have everything come from my config

     @mattly I don't think universal variables are a very good feature. I know fish uses them internally for some things but I don't ever set any on purpose. I use set -x or set -g (or occasionally set -gx) in fish.config instead. Even when things stay set -U I don't do it.
