     In a copy of a letter…sent to lawmakers ahead of #RFKJr’s confirmation hearings to lead the Dept of #Health & #Human Services, the fmr ambassador to Australia alleges that her cousin, “addicted to #attention & #power,” has given #hypocritical advice by discouraging parents from vaccinating their children while vaccinating his own children. She alleged that his “crusade against #vaccination” has also served to enrich him.

     Two #ethics experts who reviewed the agreement said his stake in the lawsuits appeared to be highly problematic, as the #FDA, which approves #drugs & #vaccines, would fall within #RFKJr’s purview as #health secretary. The experts said any action Kennedy took related to Merck, one of the world’s largest drugmakers, could appear to be motivated by his financial interest in a handsome settlement.

This was actually a point that his cousin, #CarolineKennedy, raised in her letter opposing his confirmation yesterday — she described him as a “#hypocrite” for vaccinating his children while at the same time profiting from amplifying fears about #vaccines in many parents.

     One Democrat to watch: Sen. #SheldonWhitehouse (D-Rhode Island), an old friend & roommate of #RFKJr [makes you wonder if he saw the blender]. There’s been some speculation that Whitehouse will support Kennedy, particularly because he hasn’t denounced him. Whitehouse told reporters this week that “people just need to kind of chill” about his potential vote, saying that he has never telegraphed a vote before a hearing.

Kennedy evaded the question, saying he will comply with ethical guidelines & pushed back: “You’re asking me not to sue vaccine companies.” That was NOT what she asked at all. She asked him specifically about the arrangement w/the law firm Wisner Baum where over the last 2 yrs he has collected ~$2.5M in fees for referrals.

     #HHS can influence whether #hospitals provide #abortion in emergency situations. The Biden admin issued guidance saying that #EMTALA’s requirements that hospitals provide emergency medical care also mean hospitals should provide abortion in cases where a woman’s health or life were at risk. Sen Cortez Masto asked #RFKJr if he believes that EMTALA protects a woman’s right to have an emergency abortion if her #health is threatened, in the case of an incomplete miscarriage, for example.

     When #RFKJr first described #Medicare, he seemed to ignore the half of the program that relies on #PrivateInsurance plans to provide care. Later, he acknowledged that he was enrolled in a private #MedicareAdvantage plan.

     Kennedy described #Medicaid as ”fully paid for by the federal government.” In fact, Medicaid, which provides #HealthInsurance coverage to nearly 80 million low-income Americans, is financed through a combination of state & federal funds.

     He said he supported changes to “increase transparency” &” “increase accountability.”

     When Cassidy pressed him to be more specific, Kennedy responded, “I don’t have a broad proposal for dismantling the program.”

     In a tense exchange w/Sen #BillCassidy, a #Republican from Louisiana, #RFKJr displayed a surprising lack of familiarity w/ #Medicare & #Medicaid, the govt programs responsible for covering >150 million Americans.

     At times, Kennedy seemed to confuse the 2 programs. Medicare is a federal program that provides coverage to older & disabled Americans, while Medicaid is a state-federal program that covers low-income people.

     Another protester — masked & holding a sign saying “#Vaccines save lives” — interrupted #RFKJr. “Senator, listen to me!” she yelled before being removed. Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) warned that if there are further disruptions, the hearing will be paused until Capitol Police can restore order. The woman could still be heard shouting in the hallways.

     I do agree with #RFKJr’s characterization of #Medicaid. It SUCKS. The premiums are high, most doctors do not accept it. Most drugs aren’t covered by it. The problem is there isn’t another option for the poor of the United States. Until they present a practical alternative, they cannot cut it. Period.

     Under questioning from Sen #ElizabethWarren, #RFKJr said he supports #vaccines & the “childhood schedule.” Kennedy has linked w/o scientific evidence the rise of chronic disease, autism & food allergies in the US to the “exploding vaccine schedule.” He has criticized the addition of Covid vaccines to the pediatric schedule of recommended vaccines & tweeted in 2021 that the schedule was “overburdened.”
Prior studies have found the childhood immunization schedule to be safe, & research continues.

     #RFKJr cited drugs’ “black box” warning, which states that some #antidepressants may be linked to suicidal ideation & behaviors in adolescents & young adults. The #FDA based its decision on an analysis of drug trials in which there was a risk of suicidal thoughts but no suicides. Other studies found SSRIs were associated w/lower suicide rates & a lower risk of suicidal behavior, causing some experts to call for a reevaluation of the warning.

     None of which has anything to do w/ #SchoolShootings.

     Sen #RaphaelWarnock pointedly asked #RFKJr about his past criticism of the #CDC. Some of Warnock’s constituents & church members are CDC employees. “There’s nothing I’m going to do that is going to harm CDC,” Kennedy insists.

     Warnock directly challenged RFKJr’s comments comparing CDC employees to members of the Catholic church who covered up #SexualAbuse scandals & said the CDC harmed children like #Nazi death camps. RFKJr denied making those comments.

     I hadn’t heard this despicable statement by #RFKJr before today:

     Sen #TinaSmith, D-MN, spoke about her own battle with illness in questioning Kennedy on his views about #antidepressants. She pointed to misinformation he has spread & said his statements added to the #stigma around #MentalIllness. Kennedy said in the past, without evidence, that the majority of school shooters take antidepressants, suggesting that the medications are a cause of #SchoolShootings.

     A WaPo investigation found that the *nonprofit* #RFKJr founded that Sen #BernieSanders mentioned was one of 4 that rose to prominence during the #COVID #pandemic by capitalizing on the spread of #medical #misinformation. Children’s Health Defense received $23.5M in contributions, grants & other revenue in 2022, enabling it to pay Kennedy >$510k in 2022, double his 2019 salary, tax records show.

     Asked by Sen #BernieSanders if he agrees w/ #Trump’s remarks calling #ClimateChange a “hoax,” #RFKJr said he & Trump agreed to disagree on the issue. “I believe climate change is existential. My job is to make Americans healthy again,” RFKJr said.
     
The exchanged prompted a rebuke from Advancing American Freedom, the org founded by fmr VP #MikePence, who opposes Kennedy over his past support of #abortion rights. “What other issues do radical RFK Jr. & President Trump disagree on?” the org posted.

     #RFKJr committed to advancing #FDA efforts to increase #diversity in #ClinicalTrials [he seemed flummoxed & decided to just respond “yes”]. #Health agencies removed website pages devoted to the issue after a #Trump admin order for agencies to purge websites related to DEI, STAT News reported. This raised concerns that the Trump admin would reverse course on addressing the problem of drugs & medical devices hitting the market w/insufficient #research on varying effects across demographic groups.

     Sen. #BernieSanders pressed #RFKJr on whether he stands by paraphernalia sold by his foundation, such as an outfit for babies sold by Children’s Health Defense Fund — which Kennedy founded — & is emblazoned with the message “Unvaxxed Unafraid.”
“Are you supportive of these onesies?” Sanders thundered.

     Kennedy claimed he wasn’t affiliated with the group, Sanders pointed out Kennedy only resigned after #Trump picked him.
