I tried to install Signal today. After some network issues and blindsided by ads on google/Samsung. I am asked for a google sign in to install on my phone. Which I have no account with those creeps. Signal support says that google is required. I will wait for either a suitable E2E solution or get a linux phone at some point, as I was already dissatisfied with android.

@cowman ~ Ok, tried and this requires a google password too. I don't suppose they make a version for Linux phones?

@bmacDonald94 Did you try the apk from their website?
https://signal.org/android/apk/
The store version uses google cloud messaging to notify when there is a new message. Website version doesn't have this dependency, however it is polling based so will be harder on the battery life.
In both cases, Signal does still use Cloudflare for (encrypted) message passing.
Web apk can't be updated via stores, only by that link; but can confirm, does work without google anythings (play services etc.)

@bmacDonald94 doubt it. There is a linux desktop program, but it links and syncs to the mobile app.
I dunno, I don't imagine it is signal - I don't have anything google (microG on android), works fine, I wouldn't have a google account to sign in with. :athink:
