I'm looking at reactions in Spanish and English on both sides, and it looks like, in exchange for guarantees from the US not to place Colombian citizens in chains and to guarantee their safe physical treatment, #Colombia will continue as it has for years in accepting deportations, including it seems, for the first time, via military transport.
@GottaLaff@alienghic@_L1vY_ This BBC article is rewriting the US press release. It omits that #Colombia obtained agreement from the US to ensure that deported citizens are transported safely, not in chains, with respect for their bodies, dignity and human rights. This was President Petro's core demand.
Western media is at this point consistently framing the agreement as a unilateral concession by #Colombia and that is false.
A migrant is not a criminal and must be treated with the dignity that a human being deserves.
That is why I turned back the US military planes that were carrying Colombian migrants.
I cannot make the migrants stay in a country that does not want them; but if that country turns them back it must be with dignity and respect for them and for our country.
