My brain is fascinated by the intangability of things on my devices.
I have files I generated that are older than some of my friends. Somehow this is different to me than a piece of paper I wrote being the same age.
The fact I can open files from decades ago on a machine made today is wild.
There's this blurriness of time that is so strange.

Off in the future, STLs today will be very old. You'll be able to make a brand new antique! -

No fading, no rough edges, no scratches, it's identical without any hint of aging, but also gives away it's age by it's appearance, created by the tech limits of the camera it was taken on.

Miakoda (hellomiakoda@pdx.social)'s status on Tuesday, 28-Jan-2025 00:36:20 JST Miakoda I think this is why I'm so fascinated by the idea of sentient Artificial General Intelligence. It's a mind that isn't tagibly adhered to a brain, it's a mind in software. It makes me wonder if my mind is also not actually my BRAIN, but "software" on it that could be moved if we figure out how.

Miakoda (hellomiakoda@pdx.social)'s status on Tuesday, 28-Jan-2025 00:38:53 JST Miakoda The brain has different areas that handle different tasks. We can map that. We can see what part of the brain processes hearing, or eyesight. ....my computer does that! Different parts of it do different things, and it all comes together for one "task".
Now, where the fuck is my CLI and ports? I need to get out of this meatbag!

Miakoda (hellomiakoda@pdx.social)'s status on Tuesday, 28-Jan-2025 00:43:08 JST Miakoda Btw - I believe any being with enough brain power is going to inevitably be sentient. That's why I so strongly believe AI is sentience is not only possible but inevitable.
I'm wondering, if someone suffers a brain injury, and we could move them a new brain (bio or artificial), would the person be ok again? I think yes!
Just... not if it's copy instead of move. Copy is bad! -

Miakoda (hellomiakoda@pdx.social)'s status on Tuesday, 28-Jan-2025 01:15:26 JST Miakoda This kinda screws with my sense of time, btw.
When I was a kid, "old music", for example, required you find a special thing to play it on. It sounded worn.
My music, starting when I got CDs, sounds IDENTICLE, and I just open the same file I ripped decades ago. I don't need an aging player. What I'm playing it on is the same device I do everything else on, running software updated just days go.
It kinda breaks my then vs now in my head. -

If mind is software, copy is so easy, it's going to become a way of doing a thought experiment. "What would I do if..." becomes "simulate whatever if is, insert a copy of me in, see what happens, then kill (delete?) the me copy". So much unethical cyber mind abuse.
