     @RedTechEngineer As far as I know it's the only machine with proper mainline support and decades of not having this on ARM pretty much radicalized me.
     Better have something maybe a bit slow but useful than useless once vendor stops supporting their branch.

     @lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me icecream is a little bit nicer and handles cross-architecture stuff a bit better, and is what i will be using later on (i already use it for my x86_64 stuff)

     @linear Well I never really tried distcc outside of once for fun something like 8 years ago.
     And getting a cross-compiling toolchain is always just pain, at least llvm support in crossdev works while the others almost never did but somehow it's currently broken.

     @linear Well maybe I'm just cursed with crossdev, I should try to debug failing builds but debugging toolchains is always the worst.

     @lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me admittedly i am slightly suspicious of this most recent riscv64 toolchain that i got from crossdev yesterday, but i'm more suspicious of the kernel i tried to build and am going to rule that out once my emerge -e @world on the VisionFive finishes (i started it about an hour ago; it looks to be about a third of the way done)

     @RedTechEngineer I know there's a bunch of riscv machines, with various kind of support and vendor claims.
     
     But to me if it doesn't boot with a generic boot image, it better be something I'm not really supposed to program (and connect to the internet) in the first place like an e-reader, a feature phone, or an mp3 player.

     call me optimistic, but i wouldn't worry about it.
     HiFive Premier P550 I have no doubt will be mainlined (if it isn't already), If not, at least you have until 2034 when Ubuntu 24.04 EOLs.
     
     Theres also the SpacemiT K1/M1 which support is coming for Linux 6.14.
     (its even in a laptop!)
     both of which BTFO that ancient CPU.

     @RedTechEngineer Specially as like I have pretty much proof that your typical vendor doesn't mainline for shit with my RockPro64 that's been powered down ever since I wanted to go away from PostmarketOS.
     Old board, pretty popular SoC, not mainline at all.

     And I've done NXP as well few times, not better than RockChip if you don't check prior.
     
     Hence why I'm pretty much "mainline or GTFO".
