@tek you have to wonder how many google engineers setting up a new laptop have literally used this source for their homebrew.
@jonathankoren @jonathanmatthews What could possibly go wrong?
@jonathanmatthews @tek oh yeah. That’s totally isn’t an abuse vector.
@tek it’s so weird that it says Sponsored brew.sh but the link goes to brewe.sh
How does that happen?
@jonathankoren @tek AIUI it's a feature of Google's (and other) ad platforms, so that advertisers can push the first click through ad-tracking services with unpronounceable URLs, but end up on the "correct" user-visible URL. The platform allows the advertiser to say "show this URL - I PROMISE it's where the user will end up" and then configure different first-click URLs.
@tek AdBlockers are a security product
@kallisti No one can convince me otherwise.
I never leave the home network without one.
@r343l You know there have to be at least a few cursing the situation.
@jerome Yikes!
@tek god I just installed brew on a new computer last week. Now I have to double check I was on the right website.
@tek Reports to ad team closed with no response. emails ignored.
@GentlemanTech I just paid for another year of Kagi last week. It's *sooooo* much better.
@tek google search is effectively malware now.
I switched to DDG last year and it was better. Switched to Kagi last week and that's been amazing.
@ringles Oh, very slick!
Honestly, though, I moved on to Kagi. It’s a huge upgrade.
It takes a bit of work, but you can set up the "Search Engine" in your browser (Chrome or Firefox for sure) to:
ttps://www.google.com/search?q=%s&udm=14
This disables AI, *and* ads. It's almost like useful Google again!
@tek
Yet another reason to justify my subscription to #kagi. There are no sponsor links to take advantage of.
However, the brew project really should not encourage copy/paste of these shell command pipes without inspection either.
@makuharigaijin I agree with all of that. I just renewed my annual Kagi subscription.
@m1rk0 In this case, it looked enough like a normal result that I could imagine someone not seeing the sponsored link tag and thinking it was just the first result.
