>The takeover of the La Tablada military barracks (also called the Battle of La Tablada) was an attempt to occupy the Argentine Army garrison located in La Tablada, Buenos Aires Province, on January 23 and 24, 1989, by a command of the Movimiento Todos por la Patria (MTP), during the constitutional presidency of Raúl Alfonsín. The attack was repelled after several hours of combat. Thirty-two civilians, members of the MTP command, nine military personnel, and two police officers were killed. Four members of the command were detained and disappeared by government forces, and their fate was never revealed by the Argentine state.
>According to the MTP, the attack was intended to prevent a "carapintada" (military rebellion) coup. However, researcher Claudia Hilb concluded that the leadership of the MTP aimed to provoke a popular insurrection by staging a fake "carapintada" attack on the barracks, manipulating anti-coup sentiments. Researcher Felipe Celesia agrees that there was no such "carapintada" coup attempt, and argues that the MTP sought to carry out a revolution based on the Sandinista model, through a popular insurrection that would bring about deep political changes.
>At 8:00 PM, the Army launched a new offensive from the opposite side of the Plaza de Armas, resulting in an intense exchange where both sides used rocket launchers. At 9:15 PM, still during daylight, two rockets hit the Hall, causing a large explosion in the shape of a flaming mushroom cloud. The MTP attackers claimed that the Army had used napalm or phosphorus bombs, while the IACHR (Inter-American Commission on Human Rights) considered that the event could not be proven and that even if it could be proven, it would not constitute an illegal act, as the attackers could not be considered "civilians in a peaceful attitude."
>Osvaldo Bayer stated that General Arrillaga "immediately arrived with his tanks, machine guns, and napalm grenades." One tank collided with the rear wall, creating a huge hole through which the commandos entered. Intense gunfire ensued as the building caught fire and collapsed.
