@garbados@friend.camp foss as a factionI don't think all FOSS enthusiasts are united as a faction in the slightest.nothing better than mastodonIf you think Mastodon is the best Fediverse client out there I would strongly suggest to look around a little harder.the faction’s organizational and resource shortcomingsAgain, not a single united faction, but without any help from sponsors or corporations an entire new platform was launched and maintained. It existed well before Mastodon became a thing and the unwashed masses showed up. It still (mostly) thrives just because people enjoy themselves here. It is clearly oriented at people who care for digital autonomy, those who don't care will only find flaws when they compare it to their preferred proprietary garden.how do we raise institutions that could shepherd such a work?If you want platforms owned and operated by an institutions, I'm fairly sure those still exist! There's Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and I'm sure more that I'm forgetting in this list. They "shepherd" their development in ways that keep the masses interested.

Lastly, you don't need to be on a social media platform if you think they're all bear traps. You can always just close the tab on your browser if you're not having fun.

i feel like our social media options are more or less a variety of bear traps, and the fact that foss as a faction has nothing better than mastodon for this purpose illustrates the faction’s organizational and resource shortcomings. it is so much less a problem of, how do we architect an alternative, than answering, how do we raise institutions that could shepherd such a work?

@tyil @garbados >all FOSS enthusiasts are united as a faction in the slightest.
People who try to be neutral between freedom (free software) and corporate bootlicking ("open source") don't really have much to unite over really.
